How to Start Working Out

Let’s be honest: the gym can feel like a high school cafeteria with better lighting. Everyone seems to know what they’re doing, while you're Googling “how to turn treadmill on quietly.”

If that sounds like you, welcome — you’re so not alone.

Starting a fitness journey isn’t about six-pack dreams or buying a matching gym set (although, hey, treat yourself). It’s about building trust with your own body — and that can be scary if you’ve felt disconnected for a while.

Here’s the truth: You don’t need to “get fit” before going to the gym. You don’t need to look like you belong. You already do.

So, how do you actually start when you’re intimidated AF?

1. Shrink the goal.

Instead of saying “I’m gonna work out 5x a week,” try “I’ll move for 10 minutes today.” Ten minutes is still a win. It’s a seed.

2. Find a vibe, not a routine.

Hate gyms? Don’t go. Love dancing? Do that. The best workout is the one you’ll actually do.

3. YouTube is your friend.

Search “beginner home workout” or “no equipment 10 minute stretch.” Nobody’s watching. You can pause. You can flop. You can restart.

4. Dress for comfort.

Not for aesthetics. If you feel good, you move better. Period.

5. Make it about you.

Not your body. Not the scale. Not what Karen from accounting is doing. You.

You don’t have to be confident to start. You just have to be curious. Consistency will come. Confidence will follow. And soon enough, that gym that once felt scary? It’ll feel like your space too.

Because you earned it.
